Most SEO advice — including our own earlier posts — focuses on on-page technical work: speed, schema, architecture. But the second major axis Google looks at for ranking is off-site signals — other sites mentioning you, listing you with accurate information, linking to you.
This post focuses on off-site local SEO: which directories a Skåne business should register with, how to earn a genuine local backlink, and why a review strategy shouldn't be an afterthought.
Why do off-site signals matter?
To understand whether a business is real, active, and trustworthy, Google doesn't just look at your site — it looks at how you're mentioned elsewhere on the internet. Two businesses can have equally good websites, but if one is listed consistently across 15 credible sources and has genuine local links, that one comes out ahead.
This matters especially for the Local Pack (the three-business box on Google Maps) — ranking there depends more heavily on signals different from classic organic ranking, like distance, category match, and citation/link count and consistency.
1. Register with the right directories, with accurate information
Your NAP (Name, Address, Phone) needs to be identical, character for character, everywhere it appears. "Skåne Digital" in one place, "Skåne Digital AB" in another, a different phone format somewhere else — that inconsistency makes it harder for Google to confidently recognize your business as a single entity.
Priority directories for the Sweden/Skåne market:
- Google Business Profile — the most important one, the gateway to the Local Pack
- hitta.se and eniro.se — Sweden's most-used local search/directory sites
- Bing Places — for Bing/Copilot search (not to be dismissed, its share is growing)
- Apple Business Connect — for Apple Maps and Siri results
- Reco.se — a Sweden-specific, review-heavy platform, valuable as a trust signal
Use the same category, the same description, and the same NAP everywhere you register. Consistency across a smaller number of correct listings beats scattered, inconsistent ones.
2. How do you earn a genuine local backlink?
A directory listing is a "citation" — technically different from a backlink, but it carries a similar trust signal. To earn a real, editorial backlink:
- Local partnerships: Share links with a supplier, partner, or client on a mutual "businesses we work with" page.
- Chamber of commerce / business networks: Joining local business networks in Malmö or Lund (chambers of commerce, entrepreneur communities) usually comes with a member directory page, and a link from it.
- Sponsorship: Sponsoring a local event, sports club, or community organization usually means a link on their "our sponsors" page.
- Local press/PR: Local news sites or industry publications in Skåne may be interested in a story with genuine news value (a launch, an award, a contribution to a local project).
- Guest content: Writing for a relevant, reputable site in your area of expertise (a complementary, non-competing business).
Avoid: purchased link packages, mass registration on irrelevant foreign directories, "1000 guaranteed backlinks" services. These don't help in the short term and can lead to a Google penalty in the long term.
3. Review strategy — not a backlink, but it does similar work
Google and Reco.se reviews aren't technically links, but in Google's eyes they carry a similar "other people are talking about you" signal:
- After every project/service is completed, ask the client for a review with a direct link (the easier the link is to reach, the more reviews you'll get).
- Reply to every review — positive or negative. Google treats answered reviews as a signal of an "active business."
- Never use fake reviews. It violates Google's policies, and once discovered, it destroys trust entirely.
Common mistakes
- NAP inconsistency — an old address or phone number forgotten on one directory
- Registering once and forgetting about it — directory info needs to stay current (update everywhere when your address/phone changes)
- Mass registration on irrelevant, low-quality directories — volume doesn't matter, the number of relevant, credible sources does
- Ignoring reviews — especially leaving negative reviews unanswered
Bottom line
On-page SEO (speed, schema, architecture) is the foundation — but it's not enough on its own. For a business that genuinely wants to stand out in Skåne, consistent information across the right directories, links earned through real local partnerships, and an active review strategy complement the on-page work.
